Before I really embraced minimalism and simple living, going to the mall was an activity I could do with my friends if I was bored. Since then, I have been trying to avoid shopping as a hobby. Here is a quick list of seven things you can do, one for every day of the week, instead of going to the mall:
Walk around the Neighborhood
Getting outside for some fresh air and movement is a really great way to clear your head, and resist the temptations of shopping. If walking isn’t really your speed, take out your bike or grab a friend.
Read a Book
I love going to my public library and spending some time picking out a book to read. Not only is it free, but you get to learn about a topic that interests you or escape into a world of fiction. If you don’t like to read, audio books or podcasts are good alternatives.
I know from experience that sometimes shopping is used as a way to treat yourself. Instead of breaking the bank for a treat, pamper yourself with a spa day. Take a long shower, paint your nails, or even do a facial. If physical pampering isn’t your thing, I enjoy meditation as a way to relax and treat myself.
Go on a Trip
A trip doesn’t have to mean getting on a plane. Go to the beach for some sun, or a local state park for a hike. Getting outside and enjoying nature is a lot more fun than spending time in a crowded shopping mall under fluorescent lights.
Pick up a New Hobby
I am sure there is always a hobby you’ve wanted to try, but have never found the time to do so. Whether it be trying out a new recipe or learning an instrument, learning a new skill is a great way to avoid shopping.
The hour you usually spend at the mall can be spent working out. You could go on a run, lift some weights at the gym, or even do yoga. Whatever you like to do to get a little sweaty.
A great alternative to consumption is creation. Write a poem, draw a picture, there is no limit to the things you can create. Let your imagination run wild and get crafty.
I hope you guys found some inspiration from this post, but don’t think this list is exhaustive. There are so many things you can do without going shopping and I encourage you to find out what you enjoy. Avoiding shopping doesn’t have to be a punishment!
